Gramatik’s debut Australian tour is just around the corner, and it’s one you’ll absolutely want to be part of it. The Slovenian-born musician discovered sampling and has worked his love of funk, soul, and blues into his smooth beats.
Gramatik plays OAF on Thursday, 14 March.

1. Growing Up
Jake’s (Vocals/Guitar) Dad; Terry Doyle is an old blues dog up in Cairns, he had Jake playing on stages from the age of 2 and when I showed some interest he gave me a guitar that he found at the tip and got me up on stage playing some old JJ Cale songs with them.
2. Inspirations
I’m a fag for the Rolling Stones, grew up listening to them and I still listen to them now, I really love the whole sleazy stage presence. Others would have to be Pelle Almqvist (The Hives), Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) and David Byrne (Talking Heads). I don’t like when people take their music too serious and moan about love to strangers…except for Anton Newcombe; he’s an exception, being a wacked-out wizard and all.
3. Your Band
We have three song writers that have slightly different music taste but appreciate each others input more than our own haha. Jake and Adam control more of the punk side of the band and I write more of the old R n’ B songs. Jonny, our drummer, is a congo slave that will play for hours straight if you asked him to, must be that loyal country Victorian blood.
We focus a lot on writing new songs more than nailing each solo in our older releases, perhaps because our combined attention span is that of an ape…or maybe we are just so vein that we are paranoid of feeling vein?
4. The Music You Make
I’d like to think we make some twangy rock music that won’t die when everyone forgets who Thee Oh Sees are, though I’m sure people put us in that category because of the bands we’ve played with.
We don’t over think the live show too much, just have a beer or two too many then have some fun, something always goes pear-shaped but that’s the best part, you gotta stress balls a bit ya know.
Both our releases (EP/Album) we produced and recorded together then I mixed and mastered them in my studio; Little Ghost Mastering. We recorded the album live in a single 8 hour session and much preferred it over the whole recording in 10 second segments and gluing it all together later approach. By the time we released our self-titled Album we had enough songs for another, its like a treadmill with some meat dangling in front of you.
5. Music, Right Here, Right Now
Australia has the best music scene at the moment, hundreds of bands that are so loose. I remember like 6 or 7 years ago everyone was all clean cut playing telecasters, ripping off bands like Bloc Party, It was the most boring shit to watch. The amount of nudity, blood and comic relief at shows these days provides some rich party stimuli. Some notable bands to see: Gooch Palms, Straight Arrows, King Gizzard, Ausmuteants and Bitch Prefect.
Who: Dean Whitby (vocals/guitar), Drunk Mums

Just cos the bands have finished doesn’t mean you have to go home! OAF is licensed until 6am so if y’all stick around we can party til the early hours of the morning. Our Friday I’m In Love & Saturday I’m Pregnant (ha ha) DJs have become fast favourites of the late night partygoers in Sydney. Playing a mix of indie, retro, pop & rock, our OAF DJs spin party jams that you can boogie to.
Our DJs kick off straight after the bands finish around 11.30pm on most Friday & Saturday nights. If you wanna get specific, email settimes@oxfordartfactory.com to get an automatic response of times for the next couple of weeks.
So after the show and before ya reach the hotel lobby, let’s PARTY ON, WAYNE.
