AFRO, CALYPSO & TROPICALLA.

El Guincho play one big headline show in Sydney this Friday night before setting out to rock the Laneway Festival. Don't miss it: El Guincho (Spain) + Mountains in the Sky (Melbourne) + Sleater Brockman vs Jimmy Sing @ at Oxford Art Factory - this Friday, Jan 30!

Mistletone have offered OAF subscribers a special deal - we currently have a limited number of tickets available at a 2-for-1 price of $27 + BF - available here.

"Mind-boggling Afro, Calypso and Tropicalia... pitching percussion and tumbling rhythm against a collage of tropical psyche-funk samples, uplifting melodies and pulsing vocal chants. It's club music with an organic and ethnographic twist, as potently danceable and accessible as it is proudly locative." - THE AGE

2008 was an incredible year for El Guincho's Pablo Diaz-Reixa. After releasing his debut album Alegranza in Spain on his own label, then in Australia on Mistletone, he was signed worldwide to XL and has since been frenetically touring the world.

El Guincho wowed Australian audiences with some deliriously fun live performances with Architecture in Helsinki last May. Now El Guincho returns as a two piece, with percussionist Aleix Clavera joining main man Pablo Diaz-Reixa to double the manic energy. It'll be an intoxicating, bacchanalian, tropicalia party you'll never want to end!

OPTIMO.

Lock up your daughter, lock up your wife, lock up your back door and run for your life! First hand news, and tell the whole f**king town!

Haha Industries is proud to start their new year off with an eclectic bang! Showcasing the Return of Optimo (Twitch & Wilkes) for an exclusive show together at the Oxford Art Factory on Friday the 20th of February..

After last years 4 hour awe inspiring appearance- where legend has it they flawlessly blended Punk Funk into Obscure Disco, No Wave into Acid House, Vintage digital noises into Electric Indie Rock, Simon and Garfunkel slyly into Detroit Techno, and so much more that the myth has taken on a life of its own- tickets will be sparse!

To present, they’ve put their left of field touch to projects for The Presets, Liquid Liquid, Prinzhorn Dance School, Allez Allez, the Glimmers, Wolfmother, The Gossip, Sons and Daughters and Franz Ferdinand to name a few biggies. And they’ve had releases on seminal labels including DFA, Eskimo, Kill the Dj, Domino, RVNG, Fabric, Soma, Global Underground, Wall of Sound, Parlophone, Endless Flight, etc..

Their most recent compilations “Sleepwalk” and “Walkabout” along with Twitch’s recent “10 inches of Fear” release, all display the diversity of their sound exquisitely and have been receiving rave reviews worldwide.

With tour schedules rarely involving both Twitch & Wilkes side by side at any given moment (other than at their weekly Sunday Residency at the Sub Club in Glasgow-10 years & still strong!) Sydney seems to still have one present yet to open! And we’ll give you one more hint as to what it contains…extra special, high intensity, audio-visual interludes between the TBA LIVE Acts and of course OPTIMO!

WE LOVE YOUR EARS!!

Check out Optimo's seminal No Wave mix here.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS!

The Oxford Art Factory is looking for new DJs with innovative taste in music. We are on the look out for real bedroom bangers, DJs who have had little or no experience playing in front of a crowd.

We want the bedroom to come to the Oxford Art Factory, we want to witness the jams that go down in the privacy of your own homes. The Oxford Art Factory loves new music, and old music, and hearing old music played in a way that makes it feel new. We're not hung up on genres or technical wizardry, we're just after your premium jams.

If you'd like to get a gig at the OAF, please submit a LIVE mix, with track listing, and your name (and DJ name, if you have one), your email address and phone number.

You can post CDs to DEMO / OXFORD ART FACTORY, 38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst, NSW, 2010, or email a link to download your mix to demo@oxfordartfactory.com.

DJs who have played in other venues need not apply for this as we are only looking for fresh talent with this drive.

We may not be able to get back to everyone who submits a mix, but we promise that everything will get a listen.

WHAT MAKES MEN BLUSH.

'Perverting the Perverted'

What Makes Men Blush (WMMB) is a performance collective that has hijacked Burlesque as a form to exercise boundaries, expectations, stereotypes and injustice. WMMB present tactile performances aiming to challenge audiences in a constant pursuit for perspective. Embodying hyper-realities and violent truths, the group inspires, undresses and ravages the world that too many have become accustmed to.

WMMB celebrates the ugly to realize the beautiful and celebrates the beautiful to re-define our ugly.

What Makes Men Blush are residents at the Oxford Art Factory, and can be found bringing art to the masses most weekends in the glass cube which functions as performance space for the venue.

BORN RUFFIANS.

The St. Jeromes Laneway festival along with Fasterlouder, Yen  & FBi 94.5FM present BORN RUFFIANS

The Laneway Festival loves Canadian indie, so we invited BORN RUFFIANS along to the party. The trio made waves at this year’s SXSW with their terrific live show and backed up their promise with Red Yellow Blue, a ripping, taut stomper of a record that packs a punch with its muscular instrumentation, witty lyrics and understated production. Full of surprises, BORN RUFFIANS are rollicking fun and completely endearing. http://www.myspace.com/bornruffians

ED BANGER NEW YEARS EVE PARTY.

Oxford Art Factory are set to ring in the new year in style with the best of the French! 2008 has been an amazing year for the venue, who have recently passed their first birthday, won a bunch of awards from industry types and the public alike, thrown a pile of killer parties, and hosted a dizzying array of talented acts – it seems fitting to say goodbye to the year with a bang. It is with great pleasure that we announce that we are teaming up with everyone’s favourite label Ed Banger Records to celebrate New Year’s Eve, with Busy P and DJ Mehdi headlining a party that we anticipate will not be easily forgotten.

With a broad stable of talent, home to artists such as Justice, Sebastian, Uffie and Mr Oizo, the Ed Banger crew has left an indelible mark on the music scene of the 2000s. Encompassing not only music, but fashion, design and attitude, Ed Banger no longer represents a musical genre, it represents a lifestyle.

The Ed Banger New Years Eve Party is supported by The Brag and Inthemix.com.au.

A strictly limited allocation of tickets will be available on the door for $70.

SHEONE PAINTS OAF.

Born James Choules in London 1969, SheOne has been emptying spray cans and making graffiti for over 20 years. Sidelining the usual multicoloured pictorial approach to graffiti painting he instead to focuses on the visual language of writing and the expressive possibilities of the name as a subject.

His approach to image making is to re-render abstracted hand drawn typography. Hip, data injected splats, overspray and accurate spills relay an emotional slang mapped out in highly personal shorthand.

In recent years he has managed to successfully translate the energy and scale of illegal street paintings into the well lit confines of the gallery, creating international site specific installations and exhibitions and having recently performed a live painting show at the Tate Modern, while simultaneously forging a subtle invasion into the fashion world through collaboration, self branded products and one-off pieces.

***

Sheone will be painting OAF's mural wall live.

In a first for the venue, we invite you to come in, enjoy some complimentary drinks from Jamesons, and watch as a pretty great artist paints us a new wall.

The show is presented by Oxford Art Factory and Nice Produce as part of the No Comply skateboard art exhibition, 2008.

COUSIN COLE.

COUSIN COLE (Tambourine Dream/NYC)
Smokin Psyche Sessions
Saturday 11 Oct 11pm
Oxford Art Factory

"I like [Cousin Cole’s stuff] because I can play it around other people, without boring them, making them want to cry, or ruining my reputation as the most gangster of gangster rappers.”
– MC Spank Rock

NYC party DJ and producer Cousin Cole is touring on the success of his ‘Tambourine Dream’ mixtape and remix project – a body of work that turned the business on its ear with an unexpected, yet evocative, blend of folk, psyche and indie, switching a new generation of party people on to these sounds with souped up reworks of Jose Gonzales, Joanna Newsom, Nico, Neil Young, John Lennon, Feist and a dozen other classics.

Cousin Cole stole the hearts and feet of clubbers worldwide with his ‘Crank Dat’ Soulja Boy remix last year, and at the same time fraternized with the mainstream with his cut programmed high rotation Hot 97 in NYC and Power 106 in LA, and still today played before Toronto Raptors basketball games.

Labelled the 2008 ‘blog king’, a quick trawl of the blogs gives up close on 100 results that include Cole’s exclusive edits of tracks by Wale, Peter Bjorn & John, R Kelly and The Killers, plus his banging rework of DJ Kool’s ’96 hit ‘Let Me Clear My Throat’. These efforts sit alongside 12”s like the 'Ruffle Yo Featherz' and 'Tougher Than Featherz' EPs on his own Flagrant Fowl label, remixes of Bird Peterson and releases on Baltimore label Flamin' Hotz.

Earmarked as the next big cross-over producer, his rowdy DJ sets follow suite – kicking it with all things funk, Bmore, new wave, electro and rock!

C-90.

mark dreeeewwwwww

mark dreeeewwwwww

C-90 is an exhibition by Sydney artist and curator Mark Drew, of cassette tape imagery via canvas, sculpture and illustrative print media.

The works in this show have been developed from a large scale mural painted at Oxford Art Factory in February of this year, of his teenage collection of cassette tape spines.

"in a time of MP3 data, the imagery C-90 deals with is quite emotive, recalling the graphic side of personal music collections".

Drew has been behind the scenes of many local art shows, as the co-owner of China Heights gallery. C-90 is his first major solo show, opening at Palmer Projects 6pm, Thursday, 9th October 2008 and will then continue daily up until October 15th.

Opening Night: Thursday 9th, October, 6pm-9pm.

NEO-NARCISSISM.

scott lowe invitation

The October 2008 wall at the Oxford Art Factory comes from artist Scott Lowe. Drawing on powerful sentiment from his last show, 'Foreplay', Lowe's ongoing study of human imperfections is an assertion against the unforgivable notion that all things beautiful in humans should be flawless.

The opening party is at OAF's Art After Dark bar on Friday 3rd October, from 9pm - late.
All welcome.

Diplo poster

DIPLO: An early proponent of the ‘dirty south’ sound, Diplo has been at the forefront of the promotion of Baile Funk outside of Brazil and continues to support countless musical projects around the world through his label Mad Decent. As one of the most renowned and in-demand remixers and producers, he has worked with M.I.A. and Bonde do Role to Hot Chip, and as a DJ he is famous worldwide for one thing: straight up party.

BOY 8-BIT: Named after the 8-bit samples he used to use to produce records on his Amiga computer, David Morris has come a long way from these simple, nerdy beginnings. Having built a reputation through solid party remixes for artists as diverse as The Black Ghosts, Burial, Mika, Chromeo and Armand Van Helden and his distinctive sound that combines chopped-up vocals with heavy bass and breakbeats Boy 8-Bit is regarded as one of the finest party-starters around today.

CLASSIC.

Jay Z headlining 2008's Glastonbury festival has been a bone of much contention, with Oasis' Noel Gallagher being one of the loudest voices of dissent.

"I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong." stated Gallagher, and Jay Z's response has been to open his Glasto set with the Oasis song, Wonderwall.

Dude is so hilarious, we're happy to overlook the flip flops with socks.
