FEB RESIDENTS.

WORD CHAMPION (indie bedroom producer wunder-kid) and THE MORNING PAPERS (electro pop starlet) join forces this February to play every Friday night in the gallery at The OXFORD ART FACTORY.

United by a passion for making pop music when WORLD CHAMPION + THE MORNING PAPERS play live it’s a boy-meets-girl electropop-post rock-shoegaze-indie-disco shakedown.

Not only has WORLD CHAMPION’s 80s synth stylings featured on FBi’s beforecast, the pair have taken their tunes on a wing and prayer as far away as New York City.

This February the duo play every Friday night in the Gallery at OAF alongside some other top notch Sydney bands including Hey! Big Aki, Community Radio (Cameron from Youth Group), The Vignettes, and Step Panther as well as loads of DJs filling the space in-between

Come down after work – It’s $6 with bands on early around 9pm, and WORLD CHAMPION + THE MORNING PAPERS on at 9.45pm. All done by 10.30pm.

In early 2008, after two critically acclaimed albums, Sydney band The Cops disbanded quietly and went their separate ways. Sole songwriter and frontman Simon Carter disappeared from the musical radar. He re-emerged in early 2009 with online demos of his debut solo album, The Black Book Of The Universe.

The demos showed that the same fearless musical exploration apparent in 2005’s Stomp On Tripwires and 2007’s Drop It In Their Laps was alive and well in his tiny basement studio in Summer Hill.

“I feel like everything that happened with The Cops happened to prepare me for writing this record. The Cops music was a bit of everybody’s styles; just a melting pot of all the bands I really admired, but this record I can finally say feels the most like me.
It’s an intensely personal record as well. I never really explored that side of my writing in The Cops, but I found that I craved it after we broke up.”

Produced by Carter, he and his new band recorded the record themselves in his studio for $400. It was then mixed by the band’s production team The Spectacles in Simon’s apartment. The decidedly DIY aesthetic of the recording certainly belies the end result. “The Black Book Of The Universe” is a record of such enduring grandeur, scope and soaring emotion that it’s hard to believe that this is the same man who wrote such immediate pop gems such as “Call Me Anytime”.

In 2010, Simon Carter will finally emerge as one of Australia’s most talented musical visionaries, releasing an album that seduces pop, rock, prog, psych and country into one hell of a beautiful collision.

To warm things up for the album’s release in the first week of April, Simon and his band will be taking up residence at the OXFORD ART FACTORY from next THURSDAY, JANUARY 28TH for four weeks. With free entry and 2 sets that will feature tracks from his forthcoming album plus some favourites from THE COPS’ much loved back catalogue, it’s a welcome return to the stage for this talented and unique musician and his excellent ensemble.

THE CREAM OF AUSTRALIAN STREET ART.

PHIBS from Keep Moving on Vimeo.

This month, we were very fortunate to have Australian icon of street art, Phibs, paint the gallery wall at the Oxford Art Factory.

An interesting part of the process of an ever-changing wall, but one we don't often get the chance to share, is watching artists get their work up. We've seen a lot of different techniques, some more impressive than others - but Phibs blew away everyone who visited the venue while he was paintng. Watching him push images out of his brain and onto the wall was pretty special.

The good news for you is that our good friends from Keep Moving popped in to tape one section of the wall going up.

Make sure you visit the gallery during April to see the finished piece.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS!

The Oxford Art Factory is looking for new DJs with innovative taste in music. We are on the look out for real bedroom bangers, DJs who have had little or no experience playing in front of a crowd.

We want the bedroom to come to the Oxford Art Factory, we want to witness the jams that go down in the privacy of your own homes. The Oxford Art Factory loves new music, and old music, and hearing old music played in a way that makes it feel new. We're not hung up on genres or technical wizardry, we're just after your premium jams.

If you'd like to get a gig at the OAF, please submit a LIVE mix, with track listing, and your name (and DJ name, if you have one), your email address and phone number.

You can post CDs to DEMO / OXFORD ART FACTORY, 38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst, NSW, 2010, or email a link to download your mix to demo@oxfordartfactory.com.

DJs who have played in other venues need not apply for this as we are only looking for fresh talent with this drive.

We may not be able to get back to everyone who submits a mix, but we promise that everything will get a listen.
